Neighbourhood History Exhibition, 2016

Picture
Picture
In 2016, St Mary's created a neighbourhood history exhibition, bringing together photographs, documents and memories about the changes that have taken place in the neighbourhood around the church within living memory. The exhibition was funded by our first Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) grant and reflected our commitment to increase people's understanding of the heritage of the church and its surrounding area.

The exhibition comprised several display panels (see images in the side bar) and two reminiscence scrapbooks of photographs and extracts from oral history memories. These can still be seen in the church. The scrapbooks have blank pages in them, so it's not too late to bring along your memories and any old photos you'd like to share. We can copy the latter, so you don't have to leave anything precious with us.

We also commissioned local historian Jo Palache to record interviews with nine people who remembered the neighbourhood as it was in the 1930s to 1980s. These professional oral history recordings are now preserved for public access in the East Sussex Record Office at The Keep in Falmer.

St Mary's Primary School
We have a Facebook page dedicated to the history of the church's old primary school, St Mary's, Mount Street, Brighton. Quite a few former pupils have uploaded memories and photographs there.
