Volunteering with the Friends of St Mary's

As an individual or a business, there are many ways in which you could volunteer to help the Friends of St Mary's raise funds to care for the church building. If any of the suggestions below appeal, or if you have suggestions of your own to make, please fill in the query form on this page about volunteering opportunities with the Friends.

How could you help as an individual or family?
  • Persuade your friends and colleagues to join the Friends
  • Attend events at St Mary’s and bring your family and friends along too
  • Share your knowledge – do you have memories, photos and documents about the history of St Mary’s and its neighbourhood?
  • Give some hours – could you staff a ticket desk at an event, serve drinks, or help tidy up afterwards?
  • Lend some skills – are you good with databases, graphic design, accounting, fundraising, social media?
  • Donate some goods – perhaps snacks for an event’s refreshments, paper for flyers, envelopes for a mail-out
  • Perform for St Mary’s – do you sing, dance, cook, teach a skill? Could you put together your own fundraising event?
  • Volunteer for a formal role with the Friends – committee member, treasurer, administrator, webmaster, editor, proof-reader…
How could you help as a local business?·
  • Join the Friends for an annual subscription of £15 and have your business listed in our quarterly newsletter as one of our supporters
  • Tell your customers about the Friends; persuade them to join too
  • Promote events at St Mary’s in your windows, leaflet stands or notice boards, and on your social media accounts
  • Offer a regular discount on your goods and services to people with a Friends membership – in return receive promotion of your offer in our publicity for events, the Friends’ newsletter and St Mary’s website and social media
  • Offer a one-off discount to ticket-holders of an event at St Mary’s – perhaps 10% off a pre-concert meal or a free drink with a meal
  • Donate some goods and services for administration – perhaps A3-sized printing, stationery, photocopying, a round of coffees...
  • Lend some kit for a fundraising event – kitchen and barware, sound  equipment, lighting, musical instruments, tablecloths, costumes, greenery…
  • Lend some skills for a fundraising event – catering, graphic design, marketing, set dressing, sound and lighting skills all welcome
  • Sponsor a fundraising event – a cash donation or, perhaps, a prize for a raffle, refreshments for a concert, a bunch of flowers for a performer
